The lexicographic legacy of V. D. Chernyak in the context of modern science

This article highlights the main aspects of the lexicographic legacy of V. D. Chernyak, Doctor of Philology, Professor of the Russian Language Department at Herzen University. It analyzes works reflecting Chernyak’s principal achievements in the field of theoretical, practical, and methodological lexicography within the context of contemporary linguistics. The section focusing on theoretical issues of lexicography in Chernyak’s works outlines the wide range of topics that drew the scholar’s attention, relating both to general issues of vocabulary practice and the specific features of a large number of aspect dictionaries of the Russian language. In collaboration with V. A. Kozyrev, Chernyak created the Encyclopedia of Russian Lexicography, which provides the most comprehensive and systematic description of all major dictionaries of the Russian language published over more than two centuries. The article also examines Chernyak’s work as a reviewer of numerous contemporary dictionaries. An analysis of research on lexicographic competence suggests that Chernyak was among the first to introduce this term into linguistic discourse. The section addressing Chernyak’s contribution to modern practical lexicography describes all major lexicographic projects carried out under her scientific supervision or with her participation, identifying the specific features of her approach to working on lexicographic publications. The range of lexicographic publications created with Chernyak’s participation reflects not only the breadth of her linguistic interests but also the current problems of modern linguistics, including issues within the culture of speech.
In Chernyak’s lexicographic legacy, the most notable works include a unique dictionary of culture-of-speech terms, alongside dictionaries of cultural literacy and precedent phenomena. The section ‘Methodological Lexicography’ examines the methodological foundations of all academic disciplines for bachelor’s and master’s programs developed and taught by Chernyak throughout her teaching career at the Faculty of Philology of Herzen University. These disciplines focus on topical issues in the history and current state of Russian lexicography, aiming to develop students’ lexicographic competence. The section ‘Personal Lexicography’ contains memories from Chernyak’s students and colleagues, who recall that even in her individual speech experience, she maintained a lexicographic perspective on the surrounding speech environment.
