The aesthetics of non-pleophony in contemporary poetry

The article explores the expressive and meaning-forming functions of pleophonic and non-pleophonic words in Russian poetry from the second half of the 20th century onward. The analysis reveals that words with stylistic non-pleophony are characterized by their emphasized intertextual con- nections with classical literature and are often being deromanticized. Additionally, the study identifies Slavicisms which are not supported by the poetic tradition. It is shown that poets employ non-pleophonic Slavic words in contexts featuring alliteration and paronomasia, and in etymological pairs and nests. Slavicisms often create a stylistic contrast with the expressive colloquialism of surrounding text. While non-pleophonic nouns have a long-standing presence in poetry, their derivatives acquire renewed and strengthened stylistic meaning. The study also identifies instances where non-pleophonic words are replaced with pleophonic ones.
