Analyzing the surface and deep meaning of a poetic text

This article explores the concepts of surface and deep meaning of a poetic text, adopting the methodology of communicative stylistics and taking into account the specific features of these concepts within the framework of the communicative-activity approach. The article identifies factors that are significant for the interpretation of the aesthetic content of a poetic text. These include the multi-level organization of a poetic text and its regulative methods. Surface meaning is represented by the subject-logical (denotative), thematic and plot levels, while deep meaning is represented by figurative, emotional-evaluative and ideological-aesthetic levels. Surface meaning is formed on the basis of regulatory dominants and the explicit regulatory strategy of the text, whereas deep meaning is formed by weak regulatory means and the implicit regulatory strategy.
