Linguistic reality in the context of multicultural strategic interaction

Introduction. The article addresses current issues of language policy and language planning in the context of the formation of a multipolar world and the intensification of global competition. The role of language as a tool of cultural, ideological, and political influence is examined, particularly in light of contemporary geopolitical realities, including the confrontation between Russia and the West. This article aims to analyze prospects for developing language policies that preserve linguistic diversity within Russia and strengthen the position of the Russian language abroad. Special attention is paid to the negative effects of globalization, which lead to the unification of titular languages and the extinction of minority languages.
Results. The article identifies key trends in language policy related to globalization and language homogenization. It emphasizes that the dominance of English as a global lingua franca poses risks to minority languages, potentially leading to their disappearance and the loss of cultural diversity. The processes of ‘linguistic genocide’ are analyzed, particularly in post-Soviet countries where the marginalization of the Russian language and other minority languages is observed. Examples are drawn from Ukraine, the Baltic states, and other countries, where language policies aim to exclude Russian from educational and public spheres. At the same time, it is noted that Russia, unlike many other countries, actively supports linguistic diversity by providing education and media resources in the languages of indigenous peoples. The article underscores that in Russia, 82 indigenous languages are represented in the education system, and 23 languages are used in higher education institutions.
Conclusions. The research results emphasize the need for a balanced language policy that would contribute to the preservation of cultural and linguistic heritage while strengthening the position of the Russian language internationally. It is proposed to draw on Russia’s experience in supporting linguistic diversity to develop strategies aimed at preventing ‘linguistic genocide’ and preserving ethno-cultural identity. The findings also have potential applications for further development of intercultural dialogue and the integration of language policy into global educational and cultural processes.
