Audiovisual materials in the modular teaching of Russian as a foreign language

Abstract

Introduction. The use of audiovisual materials can rightfully be considered the most universal method of both online and offline teaching. If audiovisual materials are selected correctly, their application is quite effective and meets modern standards. This article considers the principles of using audiovisual materials in teaching Russian as a foreign language (RFL). The study aims to analyze approaches to working with audiovisual texts, identify the optimal principles for RFL teaching involving interdisciplinary skills, and identify a strategy of classroom work in aspect-based literature lessons as part of RFL education. The authors analyzed existing research approaches, identified a strategy for working with text in the classroom in literature lessons, and provided an example of the practical application of audiovisual materials. The audiovisual material selected by the authors is based on the script of the classic Soviet film Scarlet Sails and meets the requirements for text selection in RFL education. The material makes it possible to activate both interdisciplinary and language skills. The novelty of the study is determined by focusing specifically on aspect-based teaching in the modular learning system, on interdisciplinary approach in RFL education, and on practical orientation using specific methods of working with the selected material.
Materials and Methods. The study employed analysis of scholarly literature, information synthesis, and methodological description of pedagogical principles and teaching strategies.
Conclusions. Having considered the general principles of selecting audiovisual material and theoretical approaches to its application, we turned to practice, showing how to work with audiovisual text in a literature lesson for international students. The authors conclude that well-structured work with audiovisual text makes it much easier for international students to perceive rather complex texts of Russian literature. Future research may be focused on selecting the most effective exercises, adapting the audiovisual text to the basic and elementary level of language proficiency, etc.
