Development and psychometric validation of a purposefulness measurement scale

Introduction. This study examines the construct of ‘purposefulness’ in contemporary psychology, conceptualized as a key volitional quality essential for goal attainment. Purposefulness is distinguished from other volitional traits by its generalized, multidimensional nature, encompassing eleven characteristic features: (1) maintaining a primary goal focus, (2) cognitive concentration on significant objectives, (3) utilization of past experience, (4) elimination of competing goals, (5) establishment of intermediate milestones, (6) sustained attentional focus, (7) behavioral adaptation to changing conditions, (8) persistent goal pursuit, (9) effort mobilization, (10) strategic optimization, and (11) obstacle overcoming. These features informed the development of diagnostic items assessing purposefulness magnitude. The study aimed to: (1) design a purposefulness measurement scale and (2) provide its psychometric validation.
Materials and Methods. The test prototype was developed through operationalization of identified features into psychometric items, with standardized scoring procedures. Validation employed parallel administration with established diagnostic tools. Participants (N varied by substudy), both male and female, included university students and mid-career professionals from Izhevsk enterprises, recruited voluntarily.
Results. The instrument demonstrated strong test-retest reliability and internal consistency, сomprehensive validation established both content validity and construct validity. The resulting brief assessment provides theoretically grounded, psychometrically robust measurement of purposefulness magnitude. Conclusions. This validated scale is suitable for research and applied settings (e.g., counseling, coaching) to foster greater motivation in clients.
