Introduction. When faced with a crisis, individuals activate adaptation mechanisms to live through the situation. Living through a crisis can be constructive or destructive. This article argues that a well-developed life perspective is important for constructive living through a crisis, enabling individuals to shape opportunities to navigate crisis situations effectively.
Materials and Methods. To test the hypothesis, a study was conducted involving 100 people who sought help from the Altai Regional Clinical Psychiatric Hospital named after Y. K. Erdman (Barnaul). The following methods were used: (1) causometry (Kronik, Akhmerov 2008), (2) the Adaptivity Multilevel Personality Questionnaire (Maklakov, Chermyanin 2006), and (3) the Experiencing a Psychological Crisis Questionnaire (Dukhnovsky 2016).
Results. The respondents predominantly showed low personal adaptive potential and low neuropsychiatric stability, indicating the onset of maladaptation when living through a crisis. Most respondents displayed a reduced sense of purpose, alongside reduced rationality and strategy, while 39 % demonstrated a distorted life perspective. All the respondents were found to be in an acute or subacute crisis. The study identified links between the parameters of life perspective, personal adaptive potential, and specific features of living through a crisis. In a state of maladaptation, individuals may lack emotions, become indifferent to the surroundings and other people, hold predominantly pessimistic assessments, display a gloomy worldview, lack self-confidence, and show a low level of mental stability. This indicates a low level of adaptive capabilities and a lack of compensatory and adaptive resources needed for a constructive way out of the crisis.
Conclusions. Future research may focus on developing and implementing a psychological support program for people living through a crisis, based on restructuring their life perspective to increase adaptive potential and facilitate constructive living through a crisis situation.
