Representation of ‘tundra’ in the artistic worldview of V. G. Tan-Bogoraz

Introduction. This study explores the artistic concept ‘tundra’ in V. G. Tan-Bogoraz’s works within the framework of Arctic discourse, adopting an anthropocentric linguistic perspective. The research focuses on The Chukchi Tales, written during the author’s initial stay in the tundra, offering a novel cognitive-linguistic analysis of how the tundra is encoded in literary language.
Materials and Methods. A combined semantic-cognitive and field-based methodology was employed, incorporating contextual, interpretive, and cognitive-discursive analysis. From the texts, 1,966 lexical units (concept markers) were extracted and distributed across three thematic groups: Landscape (1013 markers), People (881 markers), and Religion (72 markers). These were further analyzed to identify conceptual attributes.
Results. The analysis revealed distinct cognitive attributes structuring the ‘tundra’ concept. The nuclear zone emphasizes the author’s ecological and anthropological knowledge, with specific flora and fauna (28.56 %) and nomadic way of life (25.28 %) as dominant features. The near periphery highlights cultural awareness, particularly the presence of northern peoples (19.29 %) in the tundra during the period of writing The Chukchi Tales. The far periphery captures climatic conditions, including cold (8.25 %) and winter snowfall (5.64 %). A notable cognitive attribute, sacred value (3.67 %), reflects the spiritual relationship between Indigenous communities and the tundra.
Conclusions. The study demonstrates that the tundra is not merely a geographical setting but a fundamental element of cultural identity for indigenous peoples of the North. The artistic image of the tundra is shaped by the cognitive attribute desert (1.57 %), as well as such markers as ice plain, and reindeer land. Together they construct Tan-Bogoraz’s cognitive framework that aligns the tundra with vast, uninhabited spaces while simultaneously anchoring it to reindeer herding culture. These findings can inform linguocognitive research on Northern and Arctic discourse.
