Abstract

Introduction. Trainees at the Russian Ministry for Civil Defense, Emergencies and Elimination of Consequences of Natural Disasters (EMERCOM) receive mandatory training in self-regulation skills and undergo rigorous professional testing. However, when deployed to actual emergencies, EMERCOM personnel often exhibit disorientation and an inability to apply these acquired skills. This study aims to investigate correlations between the adaptation indicators of extreme-profile professionals and their psychological traits, whose regulatory role within the adaptation structure overrides situational states and immediate needs.

Materials and Methods. The study is based on a biopsychosocionoetic approach to adaptation, which involves reliance on semantic self-regulation that transcends an individual’s physical capabilities and mental states (noodynamics). Adaptation criteria are operationalized through indicators of psycho-emotional stability, satisfaction, personality–environment integration, self-efficacy, and internal motivation. Manifestations of maladaptation are evaluated based on the severity of neurotic symptoms, while noogenic dynamics are assessed through resilience and life–meaning orientations. The sample comprised EMERCOM employees enrolled on a professional development program at Saint-Petersburg University of State Fire Service of EMERCOM of Russia (N = 80).

Results. Hierarchical cluster analysis made it possible to identify within the adaptation structure an association of resilience with job satisfaction and a proactive attitude towards problems (cluster 1), while the meaningfulness of life was associated with neurotic symptoms (cluster 2), which indicates the need to actualize noogenic dynamics to increase adaptive capabilities. Professional activity, interest, and internal motivation were associated with work experience and age (cluster 3), which indicates the influence of experience on adaptive capabilities and also indicates the need to support optimal motivation in the process of age-related and professional development.

Conclusions. The findings substantiate the need to apply a biopsychosocionoetic approach and make it possible to outline learning outcomes for the development of psychological support programs at different stages of professional training for extreme-profile professionals.
